After welcoming Meryl Deep as a speaker at our recent Learning Lunch, we continued the conversation to explore what really gets in the way of change and what leaders can do differently.
As Germany’s first keynote-speaking drag queen, a former Coca-Cola leader, and a strong voice within the queer community, Meryl brings a unique perspective on transformation, identity, and culture, both inside and beyond the workplace. Her work highlights the importance of community, belonging, and creating spaces where people feel safe to show up as themselves.
We had the chance to interview her and dive deeper into her insights:
💬 Meryl, how do we create environments where people feel safe to show up as themselves, at work and beyond?
Meryl: To create a safe environment, you first need clear values. Define them, live them, and communicate them consistently - this is fundamentally a communication effort.
💬 What can companies learn from communities that embrace identity and expression?
Meryl: One of the most important things companies need to realize is the value of authenticity. There’s nothing more important than authenticity today. Communities demonstrate this clearly, and it’s a crucial asset for driving meaningful change.
💬 How can leaders build trust when people are already skeptical of change?
Meryl: As a leader, you need to drive change, and one of the most effective ways to do that is by showing vulnerability. Be honest with your team and acknowledge your own uncertainties and fears. This creates connection and trust - and together, as a team, you can drive change.
💬 Why are open conversations about change, resistance, and psychological safety so important inside companies?
Meryl: The number one driver of future success is being a company where people feel safe, seen, and heard. To create this kind of environment, you need strong, well-communicated values that are driven by senior leadership - and consistently lived across the organization.
